Intra-population seed survival during burial on a mass basis

چکیده

Survival during burial is dependent upon a seed's ability to resist pathogen pressure and physiological aging. Several studies support positive interspecific relationship between seed survival in soil coat thickness. Our research attempted understand if similar intraspecific occurs Rudbeckia mollis (Asteraceae) seeds of different mass. Seeds were collected August 2016 separated into light (383 ± 7 µg), intermediate (409 8 heavy (447 10 µg) mass classes. Pericarp thickness was measured on fresh sections from each class. buried 25 cm deep non-irrigated wildflower plot monitored for viability with standard germination test over 24 months. Final percentage varied 0 98% an overall mean 82 30% among all Germination rate correlated positively temperature suggesting dormancy cycling that consistent non-deep dormancy. There no the likelihood but class more likely be recovered intact following burial. ranged 24.7–41.4 µm there weak This suggests short-term intra-population loss However, thicker coats higher may confer greater resistance pressure. supportive

Hypothermia during Avalanche Burial

Core body temperature cooling during avalanche burial results in hypothermia, and further core temperature cooling during extrication and evacuation of an avalanche burial victim may result in more severe hypothermia. We performed two studies measuring the rate of core body temperature cooling during snow burial and after extrication from snow burial. Subjects were completely buried in a large ...

SEED PHYSIOLOGY, PRODUCTION & TECHNOLOGY Survival Characteristics of Corn Seed during Storage: I. Normal Distribution of Seed Survival

scribed by a normal distribution Understanding the survival characteristics of hybrid corn (Zea y 5 [1/s√2p]exp[2(p 2 p)2/2s2] [1] mays L.) seed during storage is necessary to predict seed deterioration. This investigation tested one key assumption of the Ellis and Roberts where y is the relative frequency of deaths occurring at viability equation, namely, that seed survival is normally distrib...

The effect of seed pre-soaking, burial depth and site conditions on the survival and growth of wild almond, Amygdalus scoparia

Wild almond (Amygdalus scoparia) is one of the most important species that provides a variety of ecological functions in the Zagros forest ecosystem. In this study, we investigated the effects of some seed treatments on the survival and growth of Amygdalus scoparia after seed planting at different aspects and elevations under natural conditions. The seed pretreatments consisted in soaking them ...

Burial increases seed longevity of two Artemisia tridentata (Asteraceae) subspecies.

PREMISE OF THE STUDY Seed longevity and persistence in soil seed banks may be especially important for population persistence in ecosystems where opportunities for seedling establishment and disturbance are unpredictable. The fire regime, an important driver of population dynamics in sagebrush steppe ecosystems, has been altered by exotic annual grass invasion. Soil seed banks may play an activ...
